Coach Doba Steps Down

In the immortal words of Bob Dylan, this blogger describes the state of Washington State football quite simply…”The times, they are a changin’”. The fickle fate of fan following forced football head coach Bill Doba off the field. After 19 years coaching in various capacities at WSU, Coach Doba will step aside to make way for someone new.

New is what seems to be driving much of the decision process with Cougar football. Many say that Martin Stadium needs new improvements. To make the new improvements, there needs to be an influx of new money to fund such a project. Better access to new money will be facilitated by a new direction for the football program. A new direction will come about best with a new head football coach.

The media cannot be all that happy about Coach Doba stepping down. After all, they have printed, posted and said over the air that Coach Doba is no longer the best man for the job at Washington State. Now that their favorite storyline has come to fruition, what will the media folks rant about now? It would seem that they fear losing your attention without the constant droning of the “Dump Doba” mantra. If that’s reality, shame on those of us who pay any heed to the media. But seriously, what’s the next storyline? Please don’t tell me we are going to be treated to endless speculation on who might be chosen to replace Coach Doba. Please! Why not more back stories about the seniors who have now played their last college football game for the Cougs? Why not more back stories about the players returning next season?

Your chorus is ringing in my ears, “Silly blogger!”

If you haven’t picked up the bitter tone in this article, let me spell it out. I AM BITTER!

Why?

Given the respect that Coach Doba has rightfully earned in the past two decades, it’s shameful that his future was the subject of such vitriolic attacks over the past year. On one hand, I won’t dispute that it might be time for him to retire. But on the other, that should at least be a mutual decision with WSU. Optimally, Coach Doba would have been able to make the decision to step down without the ranting and raving in the background. Oh well. We’ve come to dismiss such disrespect under the category of “comes with the territory”.

Coach Bill Doba is a class act. Period. Always has been. Always will be. That’s his character. Speaking as a WSU alumni, any affiliation with Coach Doba is an honor. Period.

To Coach Bill Doba, “Thanks” for many, many years of dedication to the student/athletes you have influenced for nearly twenty years. Thanks for preparing kids to play a game to the best of their collective abilities. Thanks for some outstanding memories like the Holiday Bowl and three Apple Cup victories. Thanks for standing tall as a visible, classy representative of my alma mater.

And for the many, many folks out there who were desperately hoping that Coach Doba would be replaced…be careful what you wish for. Hope that WSU grabs both of the birds you have been eyeing in the bushes.

GO COUGS!!!
